Commercial Driver’s License Program Details
The Berks Technical Institute’s Commercial Driver’s License Training: Class A Tractor-Trailer program helps prepare you to pursue a successful career in commercial driving and transportation. What You Can Learn in Our CDL Program
Practice performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections to meet safety requirements and compliance with DOT regulations. Learn to identify and report potential mechanical issues before they become problems.
Gain hands-on experience in lane changes, proper signaling, night driving, turning, and braking to develop confidence behind the wheel.
Learn essential driving techniques, including shifting gears, accelerating, braking, and backing up, to safely operate a commercial vehicle in real-world conditions.
Program Requirements
Commercial Truck Driving is regulated by both the U.S Department of Transportation and the state.
- Valid driver’s license
- Driving record meeting enrollment criteria
- HS Diploma, GED, or acceptable equivalent
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

Workforce agencies can connect students with various funding options and services, including state and federal tuition assistance through grants and programs.
Veterans or eligible beneficiaries may qualify to use the GI Bill® at BTI. Many Veterans can qualify for more than one education benefits program. Available programs include Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30), Survivor and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA/Chapter 35), Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve) and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants (Awarded to eligible students who had a parent or guardian that died as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001). Veterans can contact the Financial Aid Office at their school location for more information or apply online at https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/. A student with a physical or mental disability which may be a handicap to employment may be eligible for training services provided through the state government agency for Vocational Rehabilitation. Students desiring further information should contact the admissions office or call Vocational Rehabilitation directly.
Students with available funds can choose to pay for their training directly.

*It takes fewer than 300 hours to complete this program, therefore, CDL Training is not eligible for Title IV funding.
CDL FAQs
A Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) allows you to drive combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, as long as the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10,000 pounds. Examples include tractor-trailers, tankers, and flatbeds.
BTI’s CDL training program combines classroom instruction with hands-on driving experience. Our instructors—experienced commercial drivers—will teach you the skills to pass the CDL test and succeed in the trucking industry.
Training duration depends on your schedule:
- Full-time students can complete the CDL program in as little as four weeks.
- Part-time students can complete the program in up to eight weeks.
